Rahm Emanuel's remark this week about certain congressional Democrats has left me wondering. Yes, I'm a bit slow on the uptake. It's the weekend and this is officially old news, but it's increasingly difficult to tell if the news out of Washington is real or imaginary. Does it really warrant a click? What moron Republican could possibly take offense at calling a bunch of Democrats retarded? Had he referred to them as intellectually challenged or mentally disabled, would these same Republicans be equally incensed that he had likened the retarded to politicians? Can't we just call each othere liars like we used to and be done with it?

I'm having trouble with this one. I'm guessing that you've interpreted my support for Sen. Harry Reid's scrupulously correct use of the word "negro" as being an act of right-leaning conservatism, or that my current suggestion that we simply insult one another meaninglessly while leaving the language alone leans toward the center. In my opinion, these issues involve nothing more than common sense. What I strive for, and what I'm sure you will not object to, is uncommon sense.

Actually, if you were really referring to the logo, as I now suspect, it always worked perfectly in Safari. Its rendering engine is more forgiving and, I think, more logical. In repositioning the new logo I introduce a CSS glitch. The result was that the logo graphic went dead right inside the invisible box that contains it. From there, padding on the graphic was supposed to push it left into place. Simple enough, but the other browsers refused to acknowledge that instruction. My son uses Opera, so I looked at the blog in Opera for Mac to see how it looked and, of course, it was all wrong. How long had it been that way? I could pretend that such things are fascinating, but the truth is they are merely irksome. If I were an engineer, I suppose I'd be in hog heaven knowing I solved such a problem in under five minutes. Without knowing why exactly, when I added the padding to the box rather than the graphic, everyone was happy.
